Healthy and Efficient Buildings Initiative (HEBI) is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting energy-efficient and healthy building practices that benefit both people and the planet. Through collaboration, innovation, and advocacy, we ensure that every community has access to safe, comfortable, and sustainable built environment.
HEBI was born from years of experience in education, energy consulting, and public health advocacy. Sparked by the environmental crises and public health challenges that disproportionately affect underserved communities, HEBI was founded to address these intersecting issues through building retrofits and community empowerment.
Our team is made up of dedicated individuals who are passionate about making a difference. From our volunteers to our board members, everyone at HEBI is committed to building healthier, greener spaces for all.
Teshome leads the organization's strategic direction, development and growth as Executive Director. He leans on his years of both academic and industry experience to amplify energy efficiency and renewable energy as forces for sustainable socio-economic development.
He has multiple engineering degrees and is passionate about providing sustainable and efficient designs for all.
Kwasi is a Director at HEBI. He is responsible for operations, leading the development of actionable strategies to meet the organization's short, medium and long-term goals.
He has degrees in engineering and management and is always excited to work on projects that offer accessible solutions, especially for low-income and priority populations.

Ama is a Technical Consultant at HEBI. Her most recent work involved providing technical and advisory support for the UN's UNFCCC, where she worked closed with their six Regional Collaboration Centers to support the relevant divisions of the Secretariat in carrying out their mandate. She has degrees in real estate, climate change and sustainable development, and public administration, and has worked and consulted across multiple disciplines in several countries in Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean.
We run workshops and training programs to educate building owners, tenants, and professionals on energy-saving techniques and healthy building practices.
We work alongside other nonprofits, local and national policymakers to push for green building incentives and health-first standards.
Our energy audits and air quality tests help identify improvements that reduce energy use while improving comfort and wellness.
We manage projects from start to finish—connecting clients with funding opportunities, contractors, and high-performance building solutions.
Through partnerships with universities and industry experts, we lead pilot projects, analyze impact, and publish tools to inform policy and practice.
